Some things never wash out. is the story of a lonesome young man who unexpectedly discovers portals to his dreams and memories within the unremarkable, context of his building’s laundry room. Leafing idly through a book and waiting for his clothes to dry, the man is suddenly transported to a magical version of his childhood hometown, where rainstorms erupt indoors, golden fireflies dance in the streetlights, and once-treasured objects shimmer and beckon in the distance. In this beautiful and dusky dreamscape, our hero is confronted by memories of his estranged sister, whose insistent voice leads him through his grandfather’s old laundromat, along a melancholy ice-encrusted road, and into a mysterious abandoned movie theatre where her glowing outline awaits.

The story uses a combination of 360 video and virtual reality to create a surreal immersive experience, a meditation on how we occasionally slip into imaginative worlds while going about the ordinary tasks of our day. Our body may be sitting in a laundry room patiently waiting for our clothes to finish, but our minds take advantage of the pause to wander through our childhood memories, fanciful dreams, and adult regrets. These images leave their indelible marks on our subconscious and, though we may lose them due to neglect or attempt to hide them in the shadows, it is in our idle and unguarded moments that they will inevitably float back up to the surface. They may change colors, they may fade and begin to dissolve, but they are part of us and they will never fully wash out.

Cerebral Evidence: The Story (Download the Documentation Here)

The inspiration behind the game is the conflict between your subconcious and concious mind to in uence your thoughts. The environment in the game is imagined by the mind as a spectral plane which is an abstract extension of all the things we see and experience on a day-to-day bais.

The core idea behind gaining control is to make you believe that you are survielled every day. The phonecalls serve as a metaphor of practising control from a distance & the camera around are a clue towards constant surviellance. The land-scape is an extension of human minds desire to exsist in time which is eternal & unique.

We would also express our deep sense of gratitude to our instructor Melanie Crean for giving us the opportunity to pursue this project at the Immersive Documentary: Collab Studio. Without her support, we would never have learnt and absorbed so signi cantly from this project. We also are indebted to our industry collaborator Dan Archer , his valuable guidance, keen interest and encouragement in various stages.

We acknowledge, with great appreciation the timely support of Geyao Zhang . His guidance, sharing of valuable knowledge, continuous efforts, patience and constructive criticism has contributed immensely to the evolution of our ideas and completion of this project.

We express deep and sincere gratitude to the loving inspiration from my colleagues. The project could not have been complete without the invaluable suggestion from user testing which has also been of great value.

6th Sense Realty (Ghosts) – Project Summary and Poster

posters_page_1posters_page_2

6th Sense Realty is an immersive virtual reality experience which allows users to visit an apartment as a hypothetical renter. However, upon entering the apartment they realize something is askew. As the user moves through the space they are encouraged to examine the artifacts left by former tenants. These objects are not merely ornament; upon further examination, each object becomes activated — revealing snippets of historical material relevant to the vibrant history of the Lower East Side.

Over the past decade, the Lower East Side has become some of the most coveted real estate in the 5 boroughs. In turn, newcomers have arrived,  excited to take in the hip restaurants and bars, but are often unaware of the many historical movements and moments that have taken place on their block or even in their apartment building. Through experiencing 6th Sense Realty, we are inviting users to reckon with the idea that no apartment is truly empty and that history is living all around us.
